 ORGAN DONATIONS

Organ donations are a matter of life or death for patients with cystic fibrosis. Every year, thousands of people awaiting organ donations die before organs become available for them. Through organ donation you have the opportunity to pass on life and health to others who are desperately ill. In fact, one donor may be able to help several people. Heart, lung, and liver transplants can literally save the lives of people suffering from many diseases, including cystic fibrosis. The donation of a kidney can free someone from hours of dialysis every week and the constant fear that goes with being machine-dependent. Donated corneas can restore sight to the blind. These gifts are priceless.

The decision to donate organs upon your death is a very personal one. If it is something you would like to do, you should take the following steps in preparation:

  • Sign an organ donor card. In New Hampshire, all you need to do is sign the back of your New Hampshire Driver's License.
  • Discuss your intentions with your family. Even if you have signed an organ donor card, the next of kin is always consulted. By discussing this in advance, you will spare your family an agonizing decision during a difficult time, and give them the comfort of knowing your wishes.
Several of the CF patients Karen's Climb has helped have received lung transplants thanks to organ donations. Many others will require this life-giving operation in the years to come. Please consider giving this gift of life.
